Photo of the Week
February 22, 2004

As I am setting up this photo of the week, Panama is rocking and rolling with Carnaval ! I have celebrated Carnaval in many areas of Panama, but one of the more memorable was Carnavaito in Colon. While living on the Atlantic side in the early 1970s, we used to go down to Colon to watch the Carnaval parade Colon style. Since Colon is primarily West Indian, the customs and costumes were different than the Pollera/Montuno type of costume most associate with Carnaval. Above is a photo taken looking down a crowded 13th Street. The parade would come down Bolivar Avenue and go left on 13th Street. You can see a Canal Zone Policeman standing on the Canal Zone side of Bolivar in front of the parked blue VW. Click here for more photos I took this day. These images are scanned from half frame 35mm slides. |
