Photo of the Week

I came across this photo today while organizing my files. I was very pleased to come across it. I have no idea where I obtained it from, but is very historical with the clear view of the stairs going up to the building (yellow arrow). I did a similar presentation back in July 24, 2016 with more details of this old building. As I mentioned in 2016, I walked up these stairs and amongst the pillars that this building stood on. For reference, I have drawn a yellow line signifying the water level of Gatun Lake. We found these stairs years ago while out bottle hunting in a small boat. We spotted them and tied up the boat and went up the stairs. The stairs looked exactly as the do in this photo, which is why this photo is so important. Other photos I have come across, never showed the stairs so clearly. As I mentioned in 2016, I wonder if these stairs are still there, even now in 2025. So much destruction to the land has been done, the island of Gorgona is no longer there. I is a covered with dredge fill and is now part of the surrounding land mass. There is even a road out to it. So sad that all the history of this historic island in now gone forever, except in our memories. This photo did identify that Tropical Lodge 158 B.R.C. & A. at one time occupied this building.

Those were the days. Long live our Canal Zone memories.
