Photo of the Week

.

Back on 9/7/2025, I posted a photo of Officer Dean Anderson of the Gamboa, Canal Zone Police standing by the Gamboa Train Station.  That photo came from a photo album/s that belonged to Dean Anderson and was donated to the Panama Canal Museum years ago.  I was fortunate to download the photos and love looking through them every once in a while.  I did so recently and thought this photo was well worthy for posting.  Have six Canal Zone Police officers standing in front of the Gamboa Sub-Station back in the 1940s.  Anderson is second from the right.  A large force of officers was needed in the early days of Gamboa as the sister towns of Gamboa and Santa Cruz were quite large in population.  This building is still standing today and was used as the residence of the Pastor of the Gamboa Union Church for years.  The sub-station was moved down the road in one of the maintenance buildings, were it remained until the end of the Canal Zone.

The sign on the building must have been cut in half, just leaving the words Canal Zone Police and moved to the new location.  It hung over the entrance door for years, until the end.  Fortunately for a friend of mine, I am now in possession of that sign and it will be joining the collection at UF one of these days.  It is a very handsome sign and shows it's historical age.  I love  the font and was all hand painted with gold paint.
