Photo of the Week
2/22/2026

I was asked a question the other day as to what the large gullies that were seen throughout the Fort Amador areas and Balboa Tank Farm.  I have highlighted these land structures above with yellow lines.  I remember these gullies and always wondered why they were there.  I have always known that Balboa, Amador and the Causeway were made of fill dirt and rock that was dug out from the Culebra Cut when under construction.  When I was asked  the question the other day, my knee jerk reaction was they were area not filled level on purpose or they ran out of dirt and rock.  That wasn't the case as I have read that dirt and rock was taken from Ancon Quarry to augment the project.  After doing research, I found out some very interesting information as to why the engineers and the masterminds of those days. (See attached)  As always, I am amazed at the brilliance of those movers and shakers.  This information was lost and now found for anyone that would like to learn.

I have posted a few more images below to show the work evolved.  Some images are poor, but helps visualize the magnitude of the amount of work.

As a bonus, the last photo below is on the Amador Golf Course in play.  This came from a video that I recently got a copy of.  I just clipped a photo with one of the gullies to the rear of the golfers.  Priceless!!
